We were founded in Italy, so our original name is Koinonia Giovanni Battista.
In English, our name is Koinonia John the Baptist, and Koinonia Éoin Baiste In Irish. You’ll notice that no matter what language, Koinonia remains unchanged.
The reason for this is biblical! Koinonia is the Greek word used by Luke (the author of Acts) to describe the being together of believers after Pentecost. In English it is usually translated as community or fellowship. But no translation can do it justice. Koinonia is community. Koinonia is fellowship. But is much much more. This is why we don’t attempt to translate it!
The name Koinonia John the Baptist indicates the cornerstones of the community, its being and its doing: a unity of friends called to evangelise in the power of the Holy Spirit, following the example of John the Baptist who bore witness and directed his followers to Jesus.
Our name is the source of our distinguishing features: the first proclamation of the Good News of Jesus Christ, openness to charismatic signs after the example of John, and intentional community life.
