Koinonia John the Baptist is, made up of local individual communities like the one here in Ireland based at the Oasis of the Braid.
Each individual Koinonia, spread throughout the world, is constituted as a ‘Private Association of Christ’s Faithful’, which is a form of community in Canon Law. We are welcomed and canonically recognised by our local Ordinary for the service of evangelisation, while belonging to an international federation. Fr. Giuseppe is our current Pastor General and is based in the Holy Land.
Every movement or Religious Community in the Church adopts a slightly different vocabulary in describing their structures, and we are the same. You’ll hear us speak of Oases, Agapitos, Familial Communities and Houses of Prayer. These are simply the different elements which make Koinonia unique and help us direct our collective energy to fulfilling our call to be at the service of the New Evangelisation, witnessing to the Good News the Christ is Risen!
Click the individual sections below for an explanation of each element of our community structure. If you are interested to learn more, you can use the contact form at the bottom of the page.
”You will be called my House of Prayer”
The house of prayer is the foundation for all our activities in Koinonia John the Baptist. Our covenant members live in parishes, villages, towns and cities across Ireland. They freely invite people to join them for a time of friendship and prayer in their own home each week. These are mini gatherings for evangelisation aimed mainly at those who are distant from the faith.
“They all gathered together in one place to pray and share meals together”
The familial community is a small covenant community formed by members grouped together in a given area or region. While each member lives in their own home, they participate in the activities and service of the Koinonia to which they belong. They gather together monthly in gatherings known as Agapitos.
“He leads me beside still waters; He restores my soul”
The Oasis is the most complete form of community life. It consists of the stable presence of a leader (called a Pastor) from the community of consecrated life, together with consecrated brothers and sisters, as well as a Koinonia of covenant members, with houses of prayer, familial communities and ministries.
The Oasis of the Braid is located on the slopes of Slemish Mountain. It is the place where consecrated people live their vocation, and a place of restoration for those who visit.
“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace”
Our community was born in Camparmò, then a small townland in the Italian Alps. Since then, communities of both consecrated and lay people have been established in all continents across the world.
In order to remain united and faithful to our original charism, each Koinonia is connected within a foundation, led by our Pastor General who is chosen to serve and lead and guide the Koinonia as one body in its call to be at the service of the New Evangelisation.
