Places we visit during the course
Experience the beauty of the island, and how our past inspires people to work for peace, reconciliation and healing
This is one of the most famous sites on the whole island of Ireland.
It is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption between 50 to 60 million years ago. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. Most of the columns are hexagonal, although some also have four, fi ve, seven or eight sides. The tallest are about 12 metres (39 ft) high, and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 28 metres (92 ft) thick in places.
According to legend, the columns are the remains of a causeway built by a giant. You decide what story is true!
